Planned Transportation Spending
An examination of Rhode Island’s 2009-2012 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program reveals that transit projects account for the largest chunk of planned spending (31 percent). Transit projects include $93.5 million for the Warick Intermodal Station. Bridge maintenance/replacement projects account for 22 percent, and road maintenance/minor widening projects make up 16 percent of the spending. Projects classified as “other,” which include general planning and design projects, account for 13 percent and safety projects 9 percent. While no bridge capacity expansion projects were identified, 5 percent of the planned spending is for new road capacity projects. Bicycle/pedestrian projects make up 4 percent, and road or bridge projects with bicycle/pedestrian components (such as adding sidewalks when reconstructing a roadway) comprise less than 1 percent of the STIP. share
