Planned Transportation Spending
An examination of Massachusetts’s 2011-2014 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program reveals that transit projects account for the largest chunk of planned spending (49 percent). These projects include $872.6 million for Boston's Green Line Expansion project.* Bridge maintenance/replacement projects comprise 22 percent of the STIP, and road maintenance/minor widening projects make up 9 percent. New road capacity projects, including Boston’s Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel, also account for 9 percent of the proposed spending. Projects classified as “other,” including miscellaneous projects and administrative spending, account for 6 percent. Safety projects and bridge new capacity projects each comprise 2 percent. Bicycle/pedestrian projects account for 1 percent of the STIP. Road or bridge projects with bicycle/pedestrian components (such as adding sidewalks when reconstructing a roadway) make up less than 1 percent. share
