Planned Transportation Spending
An examination of Alabama’s 2009-2013 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program reveals that new road capacity projects account for the largest chunk of planned spending (34 percent). Road maintenance/minor widening projects follow, comprising 31 percent of the STIP. Bridge maintenance/replacement projects account for 12 percent of the STIP, and transit projects 11 percent. Projects classified as “other,” which include freight rail, comprise 4 percent of the planned expenditures. Safety projects also make up 4 percent of the STIP, and bicycle/pedestrian projects 2 percent. Bridge capacity expansion projects account for another 2 percent of the planned spending, and road or bridge projects with bicycle/pedestrian components (such as adding sidewalks when reconstructing a roadway) make up less than 1 percent of the STIP. share
